Internet use in Small and Micro Enterprises in Brazil

Happy 2010!

This is the first post this year, and is related to Internet use in Small and Micro Enterprises in Brazil.

It is an analysis of the report published by the SEBRAE in the beginning of 2009, with data for 2008, called Thematic Study of Information Technology and Communication at the SMEs.

The Internet and phone are already used by most of micro and small enterprises in Brazil.
The charts below demonstrate that the Internet is used by 71% the SMEs and the phone for 91% of SMEs.

However the benefits of these technologies are not exploited fully.

The average use of the Internet by SMEs are 10 hours per week, and only 23% of companies have a website for dissemination of its services.

The mobile phone is used mostly for voice services.

In my analysis, in order that in the next decade the Brazilian SMEs can be able to join the Mobile Internet, some stages need to be achieved:

1. The first is to prepare them for Internet commerce, and encourage the creation of the sites for SMEs stimulating the dissemination and trading in these companies.

2. The second is to encourage entrepreneurs to be users of mobile services, so that as users they can understand better the requirements of the mobile market.

3. Bring the SMEs in the mobile Internet, helping them with the development of applications specifically to serve small businesses.
