Last month I published the post "Why people in Brazil has never accessed the Internet" based on the report of the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CETIC) presenting the difficulties and interest in the Internet in
Returning to this report, another item that I captured my attention is the maximum value that people is willing to pay to access the Internet.
According to the CETIC’s report:
1. For around 53% of the population get Internet access, 56% of people in the urban area would be willing to pay R$ 30 reais. However, in rural areas only 38% of people would be willing to pay this amount.
2. Whereas the optimal price (maximum revenue), the value of Internet access is the level of R$ 50 reais, but only 35% of the population would be willing to pay this amount. Looking distinctly at rural and urban areas, we have 38% of people in urban areas and 21% of people in rural areas willing to pay R$ 50 reais for Internet access. In other words, would be excluded from Internet 80% of people from rural and 60% of the urban area.
According to the CETIC’s report, considering the mobile phone use, it appears that practically the mobile Internet use has remained stable from 2005 to 2008.
Of the total population in urban areas using mobile phone, only 6% use the phone to access the Internet.
The use of SMS grew effective, being used by 57% of urban population. Also according to the report, the SMS was used by 80% of people with income above ten wages and 36% of people with an income of 1 minimum wage.
Increased access to music and videos was more the main consequence of the use of this service by young people with higher incomes.
