It seems the digital future is conquered by the big brands and the majority are american companies. The battle of PCs on the 80s and 90s, between the giants Microsoft, Apple and IBM, was won by Microsoft. In this decade, the scenario is much more challenging.
And who is fighting: again the american companies, Apple, Google and Microsoft.
What do they have ?
1. Together, have technology to compete in the three main areas: data centers, cloud services and devices. Google is ahead with powerful data centers, but it is not an long-term advantage.
2. Google is ahead in services, but with Bing, Microsoft at least brought a rival search engine able to compete.
3. Microsoft has launched the xBox for games, with powerful on-line features.
4. Apple has specialized services such as iTunes and many applications available through the AppStore. Addicionaly a leadership with iPhone.
5. Google is lauching the Google Nexus One, to be part of the smart phones market, that is becoming dominated by Apple.
6. Apple is leader in mobile applications and digital music distribution, rivals can not develop applications to connect at the iTunes.
Which more can happen ?
Two american competitors emerge:
1. Facebook: leader on social networking, and with a plataform where people communicate, share information and collaborate on-line.
2. Amazon: with Kindle.
And One european:
1. Nokia, which has started its on-line services through Ovi. However has already closed some Nokia stores in USA.
Twitter has been presented as a powerful tool to analyze feelings (not only facts) through the Web.
Is there place for somebody else in the digital sky ? IBM ?
